August 2002 - Cracking Down on Spam

SMTP AUTHENTICATION SOON TO BE REQUIRED

In an effort to decrease SPAM (unsolicited e-mail advertisements), Web Panache has decided (like most leading ISP's: MSN, Earthlink ...etc.. ) to require SMTP authentication on our mail servers. This means our e-mail machines will reject any e-mail passed to them, unless it comes from a authenticated customer.  You will need to configure your e-mail client to require SMTP authentication. Please follow the links below for basic instructions.  If you have any questions, feel free to contact us via the Support Request form in the Customer Support Site http://support.webpan.com:

SPAM DEFINED

The definition of email SPAM is purposely vague because everybody has his or her own definition. As it currently stands, email spam usually pertains to unsolicited commercial messages sent in bulk by people you don't know--although there are exceptions to this rule.

WHY SPAM IS INCREASING

Sending masses of unsolicited messages is easy, cheap, and irresistible to solicitors who have no qualms about breaking the law.  Laws against SPAM do exist in most states, but they are rather tolerant with light sentences.  The distributed/international nature of SPAM makes it difficult to prosecute perpetrators.  The burden of controlling SPAM at this point is left to internet service providers (ISP's), hosting companies and the consumer.  For more information, visit the following sites:

HOW YOU CAN DECREASE SPAM

Learn to use the Filters or Rules tool in your e-mail client.  Filters and Rules allow you to reject pieces of mail based on certain words in the titles or content.  See the following Microsoft articles for instructions on using Rules within MS Outlook:

OL2002: How to Use the Rules Wizard in Outlook

It is also possible to filter your mail directly on the mail server using the IMail web interface:

Log into your mail account: Accessing Your Web Interface
Go to Processing rules in the drop down list on the top right of the main screen.
Select the 'HELP' link for information on how to build a rule.
This can also be done on the Domain level via logging into the root account (administrator) and selecting 'Domain Processing Rules' from the drop down list on he top right corner of the main menu.
